Amazon's Zoox unveils redesigned robotaxi ahead of upcoming expansion

In a significant development, Amazon's Zoox introduced its latest version of the toaster-shaped self-driving vehicle, boasting a range of new features designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. This unveiling comes as the company gears up for a broader rollout across the United States later this year. The redesigned robotaxi will include upgraded touchscreens, more comfortable seating with improved headrests, and thoughtful interior modifications that aid riders in locating misplaced items like keys and mobile phones. Notably, Zoox is also adjusting the positioning and size of its bidirectional reflectors. These enhancements are aimed at improving visibility, making it easier for passengers and bystanders, including law enforcement, to identify the front and back of the vehicle. As Zoox plans to expand its services into new markets, the company is preparing to monetize its rides later this year. Acquired by Amazon for $1.3 billion in 2020, Zoox faces stiff competition from Alphabet's Waymo, which currently leads the U.S. robotaxi market. Waymo has recently celebrated a milestone of over 500,000 paid rides each week across ten U.S. cities and is set to launch services in international locations like London and Tokyo. In contrast, Zoox has reported servicing over 500,000 riders since it began operations in Las Vegas last September. Currently, the company offers complimentary rides in select areas of Las Vegas and San Francisco, while also allowing a limited number of users to hail robotaxis in designated zones in Miami and Austin, Texas. Additionally, Zoox is conducting tests in six other U.S. cities. A strategic partnership with Uber was established in March, enabling Zoox's robotaxis to be accessed via the Uber app in Las Vegas, thus expanding its reach to a larger customer base. These unique vehicles, affectionately referred to as "toasters" due to their shape, are designed without traditional steering wheels or pedals, featuring four inward-facing carriage-style seats that create a shuttle-like experience. The primary challenge for Zoox remains the launch of its paid service. The company is currently awaiting approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to operate up to 2,500 of its self-driving vehicles for commercial use on public roads. Zoox's request is under review following the closure of public comments earlier this month. The company's latest robotaxi model is being referred to as its "production intent vehicle," with expectations to integrate it into the existing fleet later this year. Zoox is also set to commence large-scale production of its robotaxis at its manufacturing facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, which opened in June of last year.
