Zoox is making strides towards launching its innovative robotaxi service by requesting federal regulators to grant an exemption. This Amazon-owned company aims to deploy its uniquely designed autonomous vehicles, which notably do not feature traditional driving controls such as pedals or a steering wheel. The request for a '555 exemption' was confirmed by a Zoox representative, who stated that they are actively collaborating with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of this exemption process. According to a spokesperson from NHTSA, Zoox has applied for a temporary exemption from eight Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that currently apply to passenger vehicles equipped with automated driving systems. As part of its pursuit, NHTSA is currently reviewing Zoox’s application and intends to release a notice for public commentary following an initial assessment. This move comes on the heels of significant developments for Zoox, including the recent launch of a complimentary robotaxi service available to the public in Las Vegas. In addition, back in August, the NHTSA granted Zoox an exemption to operate its custom-built robotaxis on public roads, resolving previous debates surrounding the compliance of these autonomous vehicles with federal safety standards. However, the August exemption was limited to research and demonstration purposes. The current exemption application is pivotal as it seeks to expand the operational scope, potentially allowing Zoox to initiate a commercial robotaxi service. This latest effort falls under the NHTSA’s broader Automated Vehicle Exemption Program, designed to facilitate the demonstration of such vehicles on public thoroughfares.
