Zoox plans to put its robotaxis on the Uber app in Vegas this year

Zoox, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Amazon, is set to integrate its robotaxis into the Uber app in Las Vegas later this year, as announced by both companies. However, before this can happen, Zoox must secure approval from federal authorities to launch its robotaxi service commercially, as these vehicles are designed without traditional controls like steering wheels or pedals. This requires obtaining exemptions from the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). On Wednesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) commenced a public comment period regarding Zoox’s application for these exemptions. Currently, Zoox has a temporary exemption that allows its custom robotaxis to operate for demonstration purposes rather than for commercial use. If Zoox receives the necessary approvals, it plans to roll out its robotaxi service independently before offering rides through Uber in Las Vegas, according to information shared with TechCrunch. Presently, Zoox provides complimentary rides in both Las Vegas and San Francisco, and is also expanding its mapping and service capabilities in eight additional U.S. cities, including Dallas and Phoenix, which were revealed earlier this week. The collaboration with Uber is described as a multi-year strategic partnership, with future plans to launch services in Los Angeles by 2027. This marks Zoox’s inaugural partnership with a major platform like Uber, although Uber has previously established collaborations with over 25 autonomous vehicle firms globally. Notably, Uber’s partnership with Waymo enables the use of its robotaxis in cities like Austin and Atlanta. The ride-hailing giant has also joined forces with Baidu from China and plans to begin testing self-driving vehicles in London this year. Furthermore, Uber has partnerships with companies such as Volkswagen, May Mobility, and Pony AI. In response to these developments, Uber is enhancing its offerings for its autonomous vehicle partners. Earlier this year, TechCrunch reported on the creation of an “AV Labs” division aimed at gathering real-world driving data to support its partners’ autonomous technologies. Last month, Uber launched Uber Autonomous Solutions, a division focused on providing operational, software, and support services. To gain operational approval, Zoox is seeking exemptions from eight specific FMVSS regulations, including those requiring vehicles to be equipped with windshield defrosting systems and wipers. While the NHTSA will accept public comments for 30 days, it remains uncertain when a decision will be made. During an autonomous vehicle safety hearing on Tuesday, NHTSA chief Jonathan Morrison expressed a strong desire to establish clearer regulations for self-driving technology. He emphasized the urgency of developing effective oversight in this evolving sector while eliminating unnecessary obstacles to innovation.
