Zoox is taking significant steps toward launching its autonomous vehicle services in Dallas, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona. The company announced on Monday that it has dispatched a select number of Toyota Highlander SUVs to these cities. The vehicles will be utilized by staff members to gather essential data that will aid Zoox's autonomous software in understanding the local environments. Following this initial mapping phase, Zoox plans to test its self-driving technology using these SUVs in both metropolitan areas. Eventually, the company will transition to its specially designed robotaxis once testing is complete. This expansion into new markets is particularly crucial for Zoox, as it aims to collect data from regions that differ from the densely populated urban landscapes where its vehicles currently operate. Once operational in Dallas and Phoenix, Zoox will have a presence in ten U.S. cities, adding to its existing roster that includes Atlanta, Austin, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. The company is currently providing complimentary rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco as part of its early-rider program, having successfully completed over a million autonomous miles and transported more than 300,000 passengers in these locations. As an Amazon subsidiary, Zoox is still awaiting federal approval for its uniquely designed autonomous vehicle, which lacks a traditional steering wheel and pedals. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration previously granted Zoox an exemption from Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to allow for public road demonstrations. However, the company is still in need of additional exemptions to kickstart its commercial robotaxi operations and must gain consent from local regulatory bodies overseeing ride-hailing services, such as California’s Public Utilities Commission. This marks Zoox's inaugural operations in Arizona, a state known for its favorable regulations, flat terrain, and suitable climate for autonomous vehicle testing. Notably, Phoenix was the site where competitor Waymo launched its robotaxi services back in 2020. To support its entry into these new markets, Zoox is establishing depots in Dallas and Phoenix, along with a command center in Scottsdale. This initiative is expected to generate hundreds of jobs, as these so-called “fusion centers” will manage fleet operations, ensuring real-time coordination for vehicles navigating complex scenarios and providing rider assistance when necessary.
