In a recent conversation with The New York Times, Zoom's CEO Eric Yuan expressed his belief that artificial intelligence will revolutionize the workplace, potentially enabling a three- or four-day workweek. Yuan suggested that if AI can enhance our lives, the traditional five-day workweek might become obsolete. He stated, "If AI can improve our lives, why do we need to work five days a week? I believe every company could support a three- or four-day workweek, ultimately granting everyone more free time." Yuan elaborated on the impact of AI on employment, noting that while technological shifts often eliminate some job roles, they also create new opportunities. For instance, he mentioned that AI could assist entry-level engineers in coding, but skilled individuals would still be necessary to manage that code and oversee digital agents that AI might produce. The debate surrounding AI's influence on the job market continues to heat up. Some industry leaders, like Dario Amodei from Anthropic, warn that AI could lead to significant job losses, particularly in white-collar sectors. Conversely, Google DeepMind's CEO, Demis Hassabis, has predicted that the emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) within the next decade could usher in a period of "radical abundance" and prosperity. Yuan is not alone in his views on AI's potential to reduce working hours. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang have previously echoed similar sentiments. Gates mentioned in a 2023 podcast that a society where individuals only work three days a week could be acceptable. In contrast, Huang cautioned that while a four-day workweek might be feasible, it could result in individuals being even busier as they would need to fit the same workload into fewer days.
