Zoom's post-pandemic pivot: Sameer Raje outlines Zoom's AI-first strategy for India

Zoom, the popular video conferencing service that surged in usage during the pandemic, is embarking on a major transformation. The platform is shifting its focus from being merely a meeting application to establishing itself as an 'AI-first work platform' that offers a robust array of unified communication and collaboration tools. This strategic shift, led by Sameer Raje, General Manager and Head of India & SAARC at Zoom, aims to revolutionize the way businesses interact and operate, particularly in the thriving Indian market. In an exclusive conversation with Business Today, Raje emphasized that AI is not just an add-on but a core component of Zoom's vision, with its origins traceable to features such as virtual backgrounds. The centerpiece of their AI strategy is a 'federated model' that combines Zoom's proprietary Large Language Models (LLMs) with industry-standard ones, allowing clients the flexibility to integrate their own models. This sophisticated orchestration of AI aims to dismantle organizational silos, improve existing systems, and deliver cost-effective, high-quality AI capabilities. A standout feature of this initiative is the upgraded Zoom AI Companion. This tool has evolved from simply summarizing meetings to proactively creating tasks, scheduling meetings by coordinating participant calendars, and drafting emails. Such advancements reflect Zoom's commitment to automating routine tasks, enabling users to concentrate on higher-value endeavors, as Raje highlighted the promising future filled with new AI-driven features. Data privacy and security are paramount in Zoom's AI development, with Raje firmly stating, "We do not use customer data for our training models," a commitment outlined clearly on their website. He also stressed the importance of transparent privacy regulations and the capability for administrators to tailor AI implementations to meet specific industry needs, particularly in sensitive sectors like pharmaceuticals. This customer-centric approach to data governance is designed to foster trust and ease the integration of AI-powered workflows in enterprise environments. India holds significant strategic value for Zoom, not only as a rapidly growing market but also due to its abundant talent pool. The company operates two technology centers in India: a global support hub in Bangalore and a research and development center in Chennai that focuses on new technologies. Raje noted that while Zoom maintains a dynamic, 'startup-like' agility, future expansions of these centers will be dictated by market growth and the evolving demands of customers. Internally, Zoom's employees, affectionately dubbed 'Zoomies,' are leveraging AI to streamline their daily tasks. Raje shared insights on how AI is optimizing approval processes for leaves and travel, seamlessly integrating with internal systems for fast approvals within the Zoom interface. Additionally, the AI Companion now provides full transcriptions of in-person meetings, showcasing how AI enhances internal efficiency. Addressing concerns about AI's impact on the job market, Raje offered a balanced viewpoint. He stressed the importance of continuous learning and unlearning in the modern workforce to remain relevant, particularly in the age of AI. "If you're not going to unskill and skill and unlearn and learn, forget about AI. You're anyways going to be redundant," he cautioned, while reassuring that AI is meant to complement human capabilities, allowing individuals to focus on more creative and productive pursuits that technology cannot replicate. Zoom is also striving to reshape its post-pandemic identity beyond being viewed merely as a 'meeting app.' Raje acknowledged the challenges of this endeavor but affirmed the company's commitment to educating users through various awareness campaigns, webinars, and seminars about its broadening ecosystem of communication tools.
