Zipline snaps up another $200M to fuel its drone delivery expansion

Zipline, a U.S.-based autonomous drone delivery and logistics company, has successfully raised an additional $200 million, enhancing a funding round initially disclosed in January. Founder and CEO Keller Cliffton shared this news in a video update on X, stating, "Things have moved a little faster than we expected." This latest investment, which saw participation from cryptocurrency investment firm Paradigm, brings Zipline's total Series H funding to an impressive $800 million. The initial round, which valued the startup at $7.6 billion, included contributions from notable firms such as Fidelity Management & Research Company, Baillie Gifford, Valor Equity Partners, and Tiger Global. Founded in 2014, Zipline originally launched its drone delivery services in Africa, focusing on the delivery of blood supplies in Rwanda. Since then, the company has expanded its operations to deliver a variety of products—including food and health items—across five African nations, several U.S. cities, and Japan. The newly acquired funds will enable Zipline to broaden its service to at least four additional states in the U.S. this year, with Houston, Phoenix, and Seattle already identified as new markets. In his video message, Cliffton highlighted the significant growth of their home delivery service, which was introduced last year in the United States. He noted that the volume of deliveries exceeded their forecasts for January and February, with expectations for continued acceleration in growth over the next three months. Customers are increasingly using the drones multiple times daily and placing larger orders, contributing to an over 20% increase in the average amount of items ordered per delivery. To accommodate this rising demand, Zipline plans to double the number of brands available on its app within the next month. The company’s Platform 2 drones are capable of carrying up to eight pounds and can reach customers within a 10-mile radius, while the larger Platform 1 drones are designed for long-distance deliveries of up to 120 miles round trip. In addition to expanding its services in the U.S., Zipline is also pursuing growth in international markets. Cliffton announced a new national-scale contract in Rwanda that will facilitate the launch of its Platform 2 drone delivery service in major cities throughout the country. To support this initiative, the company is opening a third distribution center to ensure service to every hospital and health facility in Rwanda.
