Zipline, the U.S.-based autonomous drone delivery and logistics startup, has announced a significant expansion initiative, fueled by a substantial $600 million investment. This funding will enable the company to initiate operations in Houston and Phoenix early this year, marking a pivotal step in its growth strategy. With a valuation now at $7.6 billion, the company aims to broaden its reach to at least four states across the U.S. by 2026. Founded in 2014, Zipline has established a robust drone delivery ecosystem that includes proprietary logistics software, launch and landing systems, and the drones themselves. The company began its commercial journey in 2016, delivering blood supplies in Rwanda, and has since diversified its offerings to include the delivery of food, retail items, agricultural products, and health supplies across five African nations, several U.S. cities, and Japan. In 2022, Zipline introduced a home delivery service in the U.S., allowing customers to order various goods through a mobile app. The service utilizes the Platform 2 drones, which can transport up to eight pounds within a 10-mile radius. For longer distances, the larger Platform 1 drones are employed, capable of covering a round trip of up to 120 miles. The initial deployment of the P2 platform took place in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area in collaboration with Walmart, alongside partnerships with numerous restaurant chains. The company's expansion within the U.S. has significantly increased its delivery volume. In 2024, Zipline achieved a milestone of one million drone deliveries, and recently announced it has surpassed the two million mark. The growth trend is impressive, with U.S. deliveries increasing by approximately 15% week over week for the past seven months. Co-founder and CEO Keller Cliffton anticipates 2026 will be a transformative year for Zipline. He stated, "Autonomous logistics has been maturing for more than a decade, and the last year has made it clear that when deliveries are faster, cleaner, safer, and cheaper, demand not only remains high but grows exponentially." He emphasized the importance of the upcoming launches in Houston and Phoenix as the starting point for further expansion throughout the U.S. Zipline is not the only player in the burgeoning drone delivery sector. Competitors such as Flytrex, DroneUp, Amazon Prime Air, and Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, are also aiming to carve out their share of this innovative market. Wing, for instance, has announced plans to expand its operations to an additional 150 Walmart locations by 2027.
