Zipline adds ex-Tesla, Uber, Waymo execs to make drone delivery mainstream across U.S.

Zipline, a startup based in South San Francisco, is ramping up its drone delivery operations by appointing former executives from Tesla, Uber, and Waymo to its leadership team. This strategic move aims to enhance Zipline’s commercial reach both in the U.S. and internationally. Established approximately twelve years ago, Zipline has pioneered the use of fully electric, autonomous drones, successfully completing over 2.5 million deliveries. These drones are capable of transporting items up to eight pounds, encompassing a wide range of products from essential medical supplies like vaccines and blood to everyday items such as burritos and pizzas. Customers can conveniently place orders through Zipline's app, which partners with well-known brands including Little Caesars, Chipotle, and Cleveland Clinic, as well as over 100 small businesses. CEO and co-founder Keller Rinaudo revealed that Zipline now achieves a drone delivery every 20 seconds, a substantial increase from one delivery per minute in early 2025. Remarkably, one million of these deliveries occurred in just the past year, with approximately 70% of operations concentrated in the U.S. This marks a significant evolution from the company's initial focus on delivering medical and humanitarian supplies in countries like Rwanda and Ghana. Growth is also evident in Zipline's African operations, with ongoing development deals and expansion, supported in part by the U.S. State Department. Rinaudo emphasizes that the goal of Zipline is to make delivery as seamless as possible, likening it to 'teleportation.' In Dallas, the company has achieved an impressive order-to-delivery time of about five minutes. Starting this month, Zipline will introduce a 'healthcare home delivery service' in a Cleveland suburb, enabling patients to receive prescriptions at home without additional costs. The company has recently welcomed Sendil Palani, a former Tesla finance vice president, as its new chief financial officer. Palani, who shares a vision of mission-driven operations, believes Zipline can significantly reduce traffic congestion and pollution while providing rapid responses during emergencies. Zipline's production capabilities have expanded to 24,000 drones annually at its factory in South San Francisco. Palani, who joined Tesla while it was producing only one vehicle per day, sees parallels between his past with Tesla and Zipline's growth trajectory. Alongside Palani, Zipline has appointed Kevin Vosen as chief legal officer, and Allen Penn as head of commercialization and markets, both of whom bring valuable experience from their previous roles. As Zipline prepares to extend its services in cities like Austin, Houston, and Cleveland, CEO Rinaudo anticipates a growth of 15 times its current U.S. business this year, with plans to enter many more metropolitan areas and large international markets by 2027. Despite its rapid expansion, Zipline faces competition from various drone developers, including Alphabet's Wing and other startups. Industry researchers at PwC project a 65% annual growth for the U.S. drone market from 2024 to 2034, with deliveries expected to soar from approximately 13 million to over 800 million by 2034. Rinaudo remarks on the transformative moment for drone delivery, noting that what was once viewed as a far-fetched idea is now becoming mainstream, challenging traditional delivery methods that rely on large, fuel-powered vehicles.
