Zendesk acquires agentic customer service startup Forethought

Zendesk has announced its acquisition of Forethought, a startup specializing in automating customer service interactions. This strategic move is set to finalize by the end of March. Forethought, a pioneer in the field of AI-driven customer service solutions, gained prominence after winning the TechCrunch Battlefield in 2018—years before the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. The startup has since attracted notable clients such as Upwork, Grammarly, Airtable, and Datadog, and by 2025, it was handling over a billion customer interactions monthly. While financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Forethought has successfully raised $115 million in funding from various investors, including Blue Cloud Ventures and NEA, along with high-profile individual backers like Gwyneth Paltrow. Deon Nicholas, co-founder and chairman of Forethought, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting how the vision of transforming customer experiences through AI has now become a reality across multiple industries. Prior to the acquisition announcement, Nicholas shared insights on TechCrunch’s Build Mode podcast, discussing his journey from winning the Battlefield to securing initial customers and the future of agentic technology. In conjunction with the acquisition, Zendesk, known for its self-service customer support tools, plans to enhance Forethought's existing offerings and integrate its technology into its own suite of AI products, which will include advanced agents and improved automation capabilities. This acquisition is expected to significantly expedite Zendesk's product development timeline, providing a boost to its strategic goals. Since its inception in 2007, Zendesk has made around a dozen acquisitions, often keeping financial details under wraps. Its most recent acquisition, valued at $10.2 billion, was completed in November 2022 by a consortium led by private equity firms Hellman & Friedman and Permira.
