Zelenskyy makes a pitch to Silicon Valley's defense startups: Bring your AI, we'll bring the battle experience

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on American tech companies to harness their AI capabilities and collaborate with Ukraine's military experience to create groundbreaking innovations in defense technology. Speaking on CBS News' "Face the Nation," he emphasized the potential power of merging American technological advancements with Ukraine's unique battlefield insights. Zelenskyy pointed out that while U.S. firms possess advanced AI technologies, Ukraine has developed crucial drone and anti-drone strategies through necessity over the past four years of conflict with Russia. "This cooperation can be huge and the most powerful in the world," he stated, highlighting the unique resources both sides could bring to the table. Ukraine has rapidly built a diverse range of drone technologies, allowing it to strike targets near Moscow recently. This includes a newly developed fixed-wing mid-range attack drone, which has successfully penetrated areas previously considered secure by Russian forces. The experience gained from these operations has taught Ukraine vital lessons, such as the importance of mobility for drone units and the need for command centers to be strategically hidden. In the United States, the current enthusiasm for AI, coupled with a Defense Department keen on advancing autonomous military technologies, has led to an emerging defense tech industry in Silicon Valley. Companies like Anduril, founded by Palmer Luckey—known for the Oculus virtual reality headset—are at the forefront, having secured substantial funding to innovate uncrewed weapons systems. To facilitate these developments, Ukraine has established a state-supported initiative called "Test in Ukraine," which invites international firms to trial various technologies including drones, counter-drone systems, and ground robots. As Zelenskyy looks to accelerate this collaboration, he urged Silicon Valley to move beyond discussions and take decisive actions. "We need to negotiate already. Not to speak about it. Just to take steps and to do it as quick as possible," he stated, signaling the urgency of this partnership.
