The fashion world is witnessing a remarkable transformation as Zara, the prominent brand under Spanish retail powerhouse Inditex, embraces artificial intelligence to enhance its e-commerce visuals. Recent reports from Reuters and City AM reveal that the retailer has begun digitally modifying images of live models to present its latest collections, a strategy aimed at speeding up production timelines and cutting costs. This innovative approach utilizes high-quality existing photographs of models, employing AI technology to 'dress' them in various outfits or place them in different digital settings. This method enables Zara to swiftly broaden its online catalog without the logistical challenges associated with organizing new physical photo shoots for each individual item. An Inditex representative highlighted that this technology is designed to 'complement existing processes' rather than fully replace human creativity. By integrating AI, Zara strives to uphold its distinctive high-end aesthetic while keeping pace with the rapid demands of the fast-fashion industry. In an effort to address ethical considerations related to the digital use of models' likenesses, Zara has reportedly put in place a stringent consent policy. Models are contacted to approve the digital alterations of their images. Importantly, initial reports indicate that these models receive compensation comparable to traditional photo shoot fees, even when they do not have to revisit the studio. This concept of 'digital twins' is similar to initiatives recently seen with competitors like H&M, which has explored creating complete AI replicas for marketing purposes. While Zara's focus remains on maximizing the quantity of product images for its global e-commerce platforms, the shift has ignited discussions within the creative sector. The Association of Photographers in London has raised concerns that the growing use of AI-generated imagery could diminish the opportunities available for photographers, stylists, and production teams. As Zara continues to evolve its brand identity under Chairwoman Marta Ortega, the integration of AI represents a delicate balance between technological advancement and the preservation of traditional fashion photography.
