Fusion power startup Zap Energy pulls a partial pivot, adding nuclear fission to the mix

Building a fusion power plant has always been a monumental challenge, but Zap Energy, a notable player in the fusion startup arena, is taking a surprising detour. After a thorough evaluation of its journey towards a functional power plant, the company is now prioritizing the construction of a fission power facility. Zabrina Johal, the newly appointed CEO of Zap, shared insights with TechCrunch, likening fission and fusion to two sides of the same coin, acknowledging the shared hurdles both technologies face. With over $300 million raised, Zap is among the best-funded fusion startups, making this pivot noteworthy. The decision is particularly relevant as energy demands, especially from data centers powered by artificial intelligence, are projected to nearly triple by 2030. The urgency for immediate energy solutions is palpable, as fusion technologies are still years away from being grid-ready, potentially taking over a decade to mature. "We need to accelerate our efforts to deliver something that can meet today’s grid demands," Johal emphasized. Fission, which involves splitting heavy atoms like uranium to generate power, has been commercially viable for decades. In contrast, while fusion combines light atoms for energy release, it has yet to achieve a scalable and practical power generation model. Despite advancements, creating cost-effective fission reactors remains a significant challenge. The startup community is betting on small modular reactors (SMRs) to lower costs through mass production, although the benefits of this approach could take years to materialize. Zap's strategy includes generating revenue from its new fission initiative within the next year. Johal explained that their business model isn't solely focused on electricity generation; it could also involve securing federal contracts and milestone payments from companies that require substantial electricity. This approach mirrors strategies used in other sectors, like the one adopted by ASML, which successfully collaborated with semiconductor giants to fund their research and development. However, the energy sector is crowded with various technologies and suppliers, and companies will likely demand compelling innovations from Zap before committing financially. The proposed fission reactor design will utilize the 4S technology, a molten salt-cooled model previously developed by Toshiba, which promises no intellectual property conflicts. Johal is optimistic about demand for fission reactors in the coming years, asserting that the market will not have enough reactors to meet increasing needs. For Zap's fission strategy to succeed, it must either secure substantial revenue or attract new investments. The development costs for reactors are staggering, and tapping into government funding and milestone payments appears to be a primary revenue avenue. Moreover, other fusion companies are exploring side ventures to bolster their income streams, such as selling superconducting magnets or engaging in nuclear medicine. While these diversifications can be aligned with fusion development, Zap believes that its fission plans will expedite progress on various fronts, including materials testing and establishing regulatory relationships. Despite the intriguing potential of fission, it’s crucial for Zap to remain focused. The company must navigate the complexities of developing a second reactor concept based on a different technology while aiming to accelerate its journey toward commercial fusion power. While the alignment of fission and fusion offers strategic advantages, careful management will be essential to prevent this new direction from becoming a permanent diversion from its original mission.
