Starting Wednesday, YouTube will implement an artificial intelligence system aimed at estimating users' ages. This initiative is part of a larger effort to curb children’s access to inappropriate material online, sparking concerns about privacy and user experience among its audience. The AI technology will analyze user activity on the platform to determine if individuals are adults or minors, independent of the age information they provided during registration. Currently, this feature is being trialed with a select group of users in the United States, with plans for broader deployment in the near future. If the AI classifies a user as a minor, YouTube will automatically enforce its teen safety protocols on that account. These measures include limiting access to sensitive content, such as violent or sexual material, and adjusting recommendations based on age. Adult users mistakenly identified as minors will need to verify their age by submitting a government-issued ID, credit card, or a selfie. This requirement has already raised alarms among some users who fear they could be incorrectly flagged by the system. Privacy advocates have also expressed concerns over the potential risks associated with sharing sensitive personal information. The AI system will utilize various indicators, including the types of videos users search for and view, as well as the duration of their account's activity, to assess whether they are under 18. For users identified as minors, YouTube will implement additional safety measures, such as reminders to take breaks and restrictions on repetitive viewing. It is worth noting that this new age verification system will only be applicable to logged-in users. Young people can still navigate around some limitations by accessing the platform without an account, although they will be barred from viewing age-restricted content. YouTube is not alone in this endeavor; other social media platforms are also enhancing their age verification processes in response to growing concerns that young users might bypass age restrictions by providing false birthdates. This scrutiny comes from both parents and lawmakers who have long been concerned about the impact of social media on children's safety and mental health. Last year, Meta announced similar plans to employ AI on Instagram to identify when users misrepresent their ages, while TikTok has been using technology to detect users under the age of 13, the platform's minimum age requirement. Other online services, including Reddit and Discord, have begun age verification measures due to new regulations under the UK’s Online Safety Act, which took effect last month. YouTube’s AI age verification system has reportedly shown positive results in other countries prior to its US rollout. However, many users have voiced their discontent over the prospect of submitting personal data like credit cards or biometric information, leading some to express their frustrations on social media with hashtags like #boycottyoutube. Suzanne Bernstein, an attorney with the Electronic Privacy Information Center, highlighted the potential issues surrounding data management in an interview, stating that the discomfort with mandatory disclosures of sensitive information is completely valid. YouTube has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these privacy concerns but assured that it would not use any identification data for advertising purposes.
