YouTube will now guess your age using AI, and you can't lie about it

Beginning August 13, YouTube is set to trial an innovative AI-driven system in the United States designed to accurately determine if users are under the age of 18, even if they have provided a false birthdate during account registration. This initiative aims to enhance the safety of younger users by introducing additional protective measures and minimizing their exposure to potentially harmful content. This isn't merely a minor adjustment in algorithms; YouTube's AI will scrutinize various factors, including the types of videos users watch, their search histories, and the age of their accounts. If the system suspects that a user is a teenager, it will automatically activate several safety features, irrespective of the age declared upon signing up. What changes can users expect if the AI identifies them as being under 18? To begin with, YouTube will disable personalized advertising, restrict access to content deemed age-sensitive, issue reminders encouraging users to take breaks, and limit recommendations on sensitive subjects such as body image. Additionally, extra privacy prompts will appear when users upload content or leave comments. In the event of an incorrect age assessment, users misidentified as teenagers can verify their actual age using a government-issued ID, a credit card, or even a selfie. Although YouTube acknowledges that this system is not flawless, it has proven effective in other nations and is now poised for a comprehensive trial. James Beser, YouTube’s Director of Product Management, indicated that the new features will initially be rolled out to a select group of users in the U.S. to evaluate their effectiveness, with a possible global expansion on the horizon if the results are positive. This development aligns with a growing global push from governments to enhance child safety on digital platforms, with countries such as the UK and EU member states implementing stricter regulations for age verification and content moderation. However, this change may have a minor impact on content creators, as teenage viewers will only be exposed to non-personalized advertisements, potentially leading to a slight decrease in revenue for some. Nevertheless, YouTube anticipates that the overall effect will be minimal for most channels. Ultimately, this update underscores YouTube’s commitment to fostering a safer environment for its younger audience by increasingly relying on machine learning and artificial intelligence.
