YouTube adds AI powered feature to make low-res videos look sharper than ever

YouTube has rolled out an exciting new feature powered by artificial intelligence that aims to improve the viewing experience on smart TVs. This enhancement, known as 'Super Resolution,' will automatically upscale videos that are below 1080p to high-definition quality. Looking ahead, YouTube has plans to extend this capability to support upscaling up to 4K resolution. Importantly, both creators and viewers will have the choice to opt out of this upscaling feature. This approach contrasts with a previous AI-driven audio dubbing option, where viewers had to manually adjust the audio settings for each video. According to YouTube, "Creators will maintain full control over their library, ensuring that original files and resolutions remain untouched, with a transparent option to decline enhancements. Viewers can choose to watch videos in their original resolution, with 'Super Resolution' clearly marked in the settings." In addition to video enhancements, YouTube is introducing higher-quality thumbnails for content creators, increasing the limit from 2MP to an impressive 50MP. This change allows creators to showcase their videos with stunning 4K-resolution thumbnails. The platform is also beginning trials for larger video uploads with select creators, aiming to facilitate even higher-quality original content, although a specific timeline for this feature has not yet been established. YouTube emphasized in a blog post, "The TV screen is our fastest-growing platform, and we are dedicated to providing features that highlight creator content. That’s the essence of YouTube." YouTube is also revamping content discovery on TVs. Now, when viewers search for videos from a creator's channel, the platform will prioritize that channel's videos, ensuring they are displayed prominently to avoid getting lost among a sea of content. Further enhancing the viewer experience, YouTube is making it easier for users to shop while watching videos on its app. Viewers can now scan QR codes from tagged shopping videos to swiftly access product pages on their phones. Additionally, the platform is experimenting with featuring products at specific moments within videos, making it easier for viewers to engage with items of interest. YouTube stated, "By simplifying the process and capturing viewers' attention at key moments, we are facilitating immediate action on their inspirations, helping creators drive conversions and expand their brands on the largest screen in the home."
