YouTube announces new generative AI tools for Shorts creators

In an exciting announcement during the Made on YouTube live event, the platform has introduced innovative generative AI tools tailored specifically for creators of Shorts. Central to this update is a customized version of Google's text-to-video model, Veo 3, now dubbed Veo 3 Fast. This upgrade promises faster output at 480p resolution, enabling creators to produce video clips more efficiently, complete with sound for the first time. The rollout of these features is set to begin in regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for future expansion. Among the new capabilities, creators can now animate still images by transferring motion from video subjects, such as making a static person dance. This stunning technology allows for dynamic visual storytelling by utilizing advanced movement capture techniques. Additionally, creators can experiment with various artistic styles—like pop art or origami—when using Veo. YouTube is also enhancing its Shorts creation toolkit with a new remixing feature. This tool empowers creators to convert dialogue from select videos into engaging soundtracks for their own Shorts. As Dina Berrada, YouTube’s Director of Product for Shorts and Generative AI, explained, this feature is all about sparking creativity. With the Speech to Song tool, users can remix memorable phrases into catchy tracks. The AI music model Lyria 2 will be employed for soundtrack creation, allowing creators to customize the vibe of their music, choosing from options like 'chill,' 'danceable,' or 'fun.' Testing for this feature is imminent, with wider availability planned for creators in the U.S. soon. Moreover, the new "Edit with AI" feature aims to simplify the editing process, transforming raw footage into polished drafts. It intelligently selects the best moments, incorporates music, and even offers voiceovers that respond contextually to the video content, available in both English and Hindi. This tool is designed to provide creators with a solid foundation for their Shorts. YouTube is currently piloting this feature within Shorts and the YouTube Create app, with plans for broader rollout in select markets in the coming weeks.
