YouTube is testing an AI-powered search feature that shows guided answers

YouTube is set to transform the way users search for content with its innovative AI-powered interactive search feature. This new tool aims to simplify the process of finding information, particularly for popular queries like recipes and travel itineraries. Dubbed "Ask YouTube," the feature enables users to input questions such as, "plan a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara." In response, the platform will deliver comprehensive results that include a mixture of text, short video clips, and longer videos, rather than solely providing video links. This interactive approach is designed to enhance user engagement by presenting relevant video segments alongside detailed titles and channel information, helping users discover fresh creators. Additionally, the feature allows for follow-up inquiries, enabling users to ask questions like, "Where can I get good coffee?" and receive tailored suggestions in a similarly rich format. Currently, this feature is accessible to U.S. Premium subscribers aged 18 and over, who must opt into the experiment via a specific URL. Google has indicated plans to extend this functionality to non-Premium users in the future. This initiative is part of Google's broader strategy to enhance AI integration across its platforms. Following the introduction of AI mode last year, which permits users to engage in multi-part questioning, the company has also rolled out side-by-side web browsing and product price exploration features. Last month, the introduction of Gemini’s Canvas feature aimed to further streamline project management within AI mode. With the testing of this new search feature on YouTube, Google is poised to explore additional opportunities for showcasing varied video types and potentially incorporating sponsored content.
