YouTube TV to launch genre-based subscription plans in 2026

YouTube TV is gearing up to introduce an array of over ten genre-specific channel bundles in early 2026, according to an announcement made by the Google-owned platform. This significant shift marks the first instance where YouTube TV will diversify its traditional cable-like channel offerings, allowing subscribers more choice in their viewing options. Among the new packages, one will focus exclusively on sports, providing access to major broadcasters alongside prominent sports networks such as FS1, NBC Sports Network, and all ESPN channels, including ESPN Unlimited. Subscribers will also have the option to add features like NFL Sunday Ticket and RedZone to enhance their sports viewing experience. YouTube emphasizes that users will continue to enjoy popular functionalities, including unlimited DVR, multiview, key plays, and fantasy view. While the complete list of new bundles has yet to be revealed, the company has indicated that offerings will include options for news, family, and entertainment. By implementing genre-specific packages, YouTube TV aims to attract subscribers who are hesitant to commit to the full monthly price of $82.99, especially those who prefer accessing only certain categories of content. This strategic move may also appeal to viewers frustrated by ongoing subscription price increases, offering them a chance to lower their monthly expenses. Currently, the base plan for YouTube TV is set at $82.99 per month, which encompasses live and on-demand content from leading broadcasters and networks. While the future genre-focused bundles will be priced lower than the current base plan, specific pricing details have not yet been disclosed. "TV should be easy, giving viewers greater control over what they want to watch," stated Christian Oestlien, YouTube's VP and head of subscriptions, in a recent blog post. "Our objective is to provide you with the flexibility to tailor your subscription with more options. Whether you choose our main YouTube TV plan with over 100 channels or opt for a package centered on sports, news, family, or entertainment, subscribers will have the freedom to select what fits them best." This initiative coincides with a broader trend among TV providers who are introducing lower-cost streaming packages focused on specific genres. For instance, DirecTV has rolled out genre packs for various content types, while Fubo TV recently launched a sports package. Sling TV, a veteran in the market, has long been a proponent of a la carte bundle options.
