YouTube TV’s multiview is getting a huge upgrade, letting viewers mix and match channels

YouTube TV is on the brink of a significant enhancement to its multiview feature, which has evolved to cater to sports enthusiasts over the years. Initially launched to allow fans to view up to four sports channels simultaneously, the platform is now ready to offer a more personalized experience. In a recent announcement, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan detailed plans for a "fully customizable multiview" feature. This upgrade is designed to empower viewers to curate their own viewing layouts, allowing them to mix and match channels according to their specific interests, whether it be sports, news, or entertainment. Originally introduced for sports broadcasts in 2023, the multiview feature expanded its scope to include a variety of categories, albeit with a limited set of preselected channels such as CNN, MSNBC, HGTV, and Food Network. Following this, YouTube TV started testing a more flexible approach, enabling select users to choose any channels they prefer for side-by-side viewing. This new capability is particularly appealing for families and households with diverse viewing preferences, as it facilitates the simultaneous enjoyment of different genres on a single screen. To utilize the multiview feature, users can simply press the down button on their remote and look for the Multiview icon or the “Watch Multiview” option to select up to three additional live channels. In addition to the multiview update, Mohan announced an upcoming launch of genre-specific channel packages. These packages aim to provide subscribers with more options in terms of content selection, allowing them to focus on specific interests such as sports, news, family programming, or entertainment. While details regarding the pricing and launch dates of these packages remain under wraps, further announcements are anticipated in the coming months as YouTube TV gears up for these exciting developments.
