Alphabet and Disney have reached a significant agreement to restore ABC and ESPN content to YouTube TV, following a two-week impasse that began on October 31. This standoff resulted in the absence of key live sporting events, including college football games and two Monday Night Football broadcasts, from the widely-used streaming platform. In a statement, YouTube announced, "We’re pleased to inform our subscribers that we have successfully negotiated a deal with Disney that enhances the value of our service and offers future flexibility. Channels such as ABC, ESPN, and FX will begin reappearing on the platform throughout the day, along with previously recorded content in users’ libraries. We thank our subscribers for their patience during these negotiations." Disney Entertainment executives Alan Bergman and David Waldman, alongside ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing its alignment with audience viewing preferences. They stated, "We are delighted that our networks are back just in time for fans to enjoy a variety of programming options this weekend, including college football." Prior to this resolution, over 20 Disney-owned channels, including FX, NatGeo, Disney Channel, and Freeform, were removed from YouTube TV, prompting the service to offer $20 credits to affected subscribers due to the disruption. The primary contention in negotiations revolved around the fees Disney charges YouTube TV for its channels. Reports indicated that ESPN, Disney’s most lucrative channel, demands a carriage fee exceeding $10 per pay-TV subscriber, making it the costliest network in the U.S. This conflict is not an isolated incident; earlier this year, YouTube TV faced similar challenges with NBCUniversal, nearly losing access to content such as "Sunday Night Football" and "America's Got Talent" before reaching a resolution. Additionally, in August, YouTube TV was on the brink of losing Fox channels, including Fox News and Fox Sports, just before the college football season commenced. Looking ahead, YouTube TV announced options for future programming packages with Disney and other partners. By the end of 2026, Disney plans to provide base plan subscribers with access to a selection of live and on-demand programming from ESPN Unlimited, which will include content from ESPN+ and additional offerings from its new all-inclusive digital service launching later this year.
