Disney and YouTube TV reach deal to end blackout

After a two-week interruption, YouTube TV and Disney have announced a new agreement that will reinstate access to popular Disney channels such as ABC, ESPN, and FX on the streaming platform. This deal not only restores these networks but also allows YouTube TV subscribers to access ESPN's new direct-to-consumer service at no extra cost. Additionally, YouTube will have the opportunity to offer select Disney networks alongside the Disney+/Hulu bundle in various package options. In a joint statement, Disney Entertainment Co-Chairmen Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, along with ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro, highlighted how this agreement acknowledges the significant value of Disney's programming while enhancing flexibility and choice for YouTube TV subscribers. Disney executives expressed satisfaction with the timing of the deal, ensuring that fans can enjoy a range of programming options, including college football, over the weekend. YouTube also confirmed that affected channels would be restored throughout the day, expressing appreciation for subscribers' patience during the negotiation period. YouTube TV aims to serve as a cable alternative, but it frequently faces challenges similar to traditional cable providers, primarily revolving around financial agreements with content providers. The last negotiation between YouTube and Disney in 2022 resulted in a brief blackout, and this time, YouTube offered affected customers a $20 credit for future bills. During the blackout, a survey indicated that 24% of YouTube TV's over 10 million subscribers had either canceled or were considering canceling their subscriptions due to the disruption. However, a spokesperson from YouTube noted that the actual subscriber churn was manageable and did not align with the survey's findings. Amidst the frustration, some users, like TechCrunch’s Amanda Silberling, expressed their relief as the blackout concluded, allowing them to return to their favorite shows, including “Jeopardy!”
