YouTube will soon let creators make Shorts with their own AI likeness

In an exciting development for content creators, YouTube is set to introduce a feature that will enable them to create Shorts using their own digital likenesses. This announcement came from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan during a recent address, where he highlighted the platform's ongoing commitment to innovation. Mohan stated that later this year, creators will have the ability to generate Shorts that feature their own likenesses, alongside new tools for creating games and experimenting with music through simple text prompts. "AI will serve as a medium for creative expression, not a substitute for human creativity," he emphasized in his annual letter. Currently, YouTube Shorts boasts an impressive average of 200 billion daily views, making it one of the platform's most popular features. To maintain and grow this viewership, YouTube is continuously investing in enhancing the Shorts experience. While specific details on the new likeness feature remain under wraps, it will complement existing AI tools for content creation, such as AI-generated clips, stickers, and auto-dubbing. Additionally, YouTube plans to equip creators with tools to manage the usage of their likeness in AI-generated content, ensuring they have control over how their image is represented. In a move to tackle potential misuse, YouTube has already implemented likeness-detection technology to help creators identify unauthorized AI-generated content that features their likeness, such as their voice or face. This technology allows creators to take action against the misuse of their image. Mohan acknowledged the challenges posed by the rise of AI-generated content and emphasized the platform's responsibility to maintain a high-quality viewing experience. He noted that, over the past two decades, YouTube has learned to adapt to evolving trends, turning previously niche formats like ASMR and gaming into mainstream successes. However, with this evolution comes the responsibility to combat low-quality AI content. To address these concerns, YouTube is enhancing its existing systems that have successfully minimized spam and clickbait, while also reducing the spread of low-quality, repetitive content. Additionally, YouTube is planning to expand Shorts with new formats, including image posts, drawing inspiration from what has proven successful on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels.
