No more YouTube Premium if you don't live in the same house: YouTube begins Netflix-style crackdown

YouTube is ramping up its enforcement of password sharing policies on its Premium Family plan, mirroring recent actions taken by Netflix. The platform has begun alerting users that their Premium benefits could be suspended if family members are not residing in the same household. Reports indicate that numerous users have received emails with alarming notifications stating, 'Your YouTube Premium family membership will be paused.' The communications clarify that all individuals included in a Premium Family subscription must live at the same address as the primary account holder. Accounts identified as non-compliant are granted a grace period of 14 days before their access is halted. Once paused, those affected will remain part of the family group but will revert to the ad-supported version of YouTube. In India, the Premium Family plan is available for ₹299 per month, allowing up to five additional members to enjoy benefits such as ad-free videos, YouTube Music, offline downloads, and background play. Although the stipulation requiring members to live together has been in place for some time, YouTube previously took a lenient approach, enabling friends and relatives residing in different households to share the benefits. Now, YouTube employs an 'electronic check-in' every 30 days to verify eligibility, using location and account data to ensure all members are indeed part of a single household. Previously, failing this check resulted in minimal consequences, but the platform is now taking decisive action based on the findings. This shift comes at a significant moment, as just weeks ago, YouTube began testing a two-person Premium plan tailored for couples or roommates not fitting the stringent 'family household' criteria. By tightening rules on the family plan while introducing smaller, more affordable options, YouTube seems to be steering users toward legitimate subscriptions rather than shared accounts. The motive behind this crackdown is clear: revenue growth. Similar to Netflix's strategy against password sharing, YouTube stands to benefit financially if users who previously relied on shared access transition to their own individual subscriptions. Currently, reports suggest that this enforcement is not yet widespread, with mentions appearing mainly on platforms like Reddit. However, users are encouraged to brace themselves for a broader rollout in the near future. Those impacted by this change will have three options: join a legitimate family plan with members of the same household, switch to an individual or smaller plan, or revert to the free, ad-supported version of YouTube.
