YouTube prepares crackdown on ‘mass-produced’ and ‘repetitive’ videos, as concern over AI slop grows

YouTube is set to enhance its policies aimed at regulating content that is deemed 'inauthentic,' particularly focusing on mass-produced and repetitive videos. This move comes in response to growing concerns over the influx of low-quality content generated through AI technologies. Starting July 15, the platform will introduce updated guidelines for its YouTube Partner Program (YPP) Monetization policies, which will specify what types of content are eligible for revenue generation. Although the exact details of the policy changes have not yet been disclosed, YouTube’s Help documentation indicates that creators have always been expected to upload 'original' and 'authentic' material. The forthcoming updates are designed to help creators better understand what constitutes 'inauthentic' content in the current landscape. Some creators have expressed worry that these updates could restrict their monetization opportunities for videos such as reaction clips or compilations. However, Rene Ritchie, YouTube’s Head of Editorial & Creator Liaison, has reassured users that this adjustment is merely a 'minor update' to existing YPP policies, intended to clarify criteria for identifying mass-produced or repetitive content. Ritchie emphasized that content of this nature has historically been ineligible for monetization, as audiences often perceive it as spam. The rise of AI technology has made it increasingly simple to produce videos that fall into these problematic categories. YouTube is now inundated with what some refer to as 'AI slop,' a term denoting low-quality media generated through AI tools. This includes instances where AI voiceovers are placed over various images or video clips using text-to-video applications. Some channels dedicated to AI-generated music have amassed millions of followers, while misleading AI-generated videos related to current events have also attracted significant viewership. In a notable case earlier this year, a viral true crime series on YouTube was revealed to be entirely created by AI. Even YouTube CEO Neal Mohan's likeness was exploited in an AI-generated phishing scheme on the platform, despite existing mechanisms for reporting deepfake content. While YouTube may refer to the upcoming changes as a simple clarification, the potential for unchecked AI-generated content to harm the platform's reputation and value is a serious concern. Thus, the implementation of clearer policies appears essential for maintaining the integrity of the YouTube community.
