YouTube will now automatically label AI videos

In an important update for content creators, YouTube has announced it will take the initiative to label videos that utilize advanced AI technology. This shift, revealed on Wednesday, indicates that YouTube's internal systems will now automatically tag videos that feature significant photorealistic AI elements, removing the onus from creators to do so themselves. This move enhances the platform's existing AI labeling system, which has been in place for over two years. Previously, creators were required to disclose when their videos contained AI-generated content that could be confused for real people, places, or events. However, whimsical or clearly fantastical content, such as animated unicorns, did not require such labeling. YouTube's commitment to AI transparency comes in the wake of Google’s introduction of Gemini Omni, a new suite of multimodal AI models capable of producing high-quality videos with a nuanced understanding of various subjects. Starting in May, YouTube plans to implement new internal mechanisms to identify and label AI-generated content more effectively. While creators are still encouraged to disclose AI usage, YouTube will step in and label videos automatically if they fail to do so. Importantly, creators will have the option to amend their video's disclosure status if they believe their content has been misidentified. However, videos produced using YouTube's AI tools will carry labels that cannot be removed. Additionally, videos marked with C2PA metadata, indicating they are entirely AI-generated, will have permanent labels attached. This automatic labeling feature follows the recent expansion of YouTube’s AI deepfake detection capabilities, which now allow users to search for face matches across the platform. The company is also ensuring that AI labels become more visible; they will now be displayed directly under the video player for long-form content and prominently on YouTube Shorts. For AI content that is only marginally altered or animated, labels will be found in the expanded description. Despite these labeling changes, YouTube emphasizes that the presence of AI labels will not affect video recommendations or monetization opportunities. Alongside these enhancements, YouTube continues to invest in AI-driven features such as interactive search tools, playlist generation, and AI video summaries, underscoring its commitment to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence across its platform.
