Indian Gen Z embraces translated international content as language barriers dissolve

A recent YouTube report has unveiled a transformative trend in digital media consumption among India's Gen Z, revealing that 77% of young viewers are now engaging with content translated from various languages. The 2025 'Culture and Trends Report' illustrates a pivotal shift where language is increasingly seen as a customizable aspect of entertainment, rather than a barrier. This surge in translated media is propelled by both international creators and local industries striving to cater to a diverse, multilingual audience. Notably, global creator MrBeast has successfully attracted over 47 million subscribers in India by providing videos with audio tracks in seven different regional languages. This approach is being emulated by the Indian film sector, with major film trailers, including the one for 'Coolie,' launched simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Local content creators, such as Ashish Chanchlani, are also adapting by releasing new series in multiple dubbed versions, thereby maximizing their reach across the country. Beyond mere entertainment, YouTube has become a crucial platform for Indian Gen Z to stay informed about global events, with 76% of users relying on it for international news and cultural insights. This trend is not only reshaping how young people consume media but is also influencing everyday conversations. Approximately 68% of respondents have noted the incorporation of slang and phrases from digital videos into their daily communication. Furthermore, the report highlights the significant role of artificial intelligence in this evolution. Innovations like 'Auto Dubbing' and AI-driven editing tools are helping creators overcome technical challenges when reaching diverse audiences. Additionally, visual storytelling is flourishing, with creators like Kerala's KL BRO Biju Rithvik amassing over 79 million subscribers by focusing on non-verbal content that resonates universally, transcending language barriers.
