YouTube Shorts is adding an image-to-video AI tool, new AI effects

In a significant update, YouTube has introduced new generative AI tools for Shorts creators, enhancing the way users can interact with their content. Among these features is an innovative image-to-video tool that allows users to convert a still image from their camera roll into a dynamic six-second video clip. This new functionality offers creators a range of suggestions tailored to the uploaded photo, enabling them to animate landscape images, enliven everyday snapshots, or bring group photos to life. A striking example provided by YouTube showcases how a static image of a pedestrian signal can be transformed into a lively video that zooms in on an animated version of the walking man icon. Similar to other AI offerings in the market, such as the ‘Animate’ tool in Meta’s Edits app, this feature draws inspiration from existing technology like Google’s Gemini. The rollout of the image-to-video tool will begin in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand over the next week, with plans to expand its availability to additional regions later this year. In addition to the image-to-video feature, YouTube is also launching new AI effects that allow creators to morph their doodles into artistic visuals or turn selfies into imaginative underwater scenes. Users can explore these effects by selecting the “Effects” icon in the Shorts camera and navigating to the “AI” section. These advancements are powered by Veo 2, Google’s video generation AI model, which ensures that all AI-generated content is clearly labeled and watermarked with SynthID for transparency. Furthermore, during the recent Cannes Lions 2025 event, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan revealed plans for an upcoming Veo 3 generator that will integrate both video and audio generation into Shorts, set to launch later this summer. As Shorts continue to gain popularity, averaging over 200 billion daily views, YouTube is also introducing an AI playground—a new hub for creators to access generative AI tools, inspiration, and pre-filled prompts, which is now available in the same regions as the new features.
