In a surprising turn of events, tech conglomerate Alphabet has pledged $22 million towards the construction of a new ballroom at the White House, stemming from a legal agreement with former President Donald Trump. This settlement arose after Trump was banned from YouTube following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot by his supporters. The announcement of the demolition of part of the East Wing to make way for this ambitious project has sparked public backlash, as many question the funding sources for the overall $250 million, 90,000 square-foot building. Alphabet's contribution, which accounts for nearly 10% of the projected costs, will be directed to the Trust for the National Mall, a tax-exempt organization committed to the preservation and enhancement of the National Mall. Despite Trump's prior assurances that taxpayer money would not fund the ballroom, the identity of other financial backers remains largely unknown. During a July statement, Trump emphasized that the construction would maintain respect for the existing structure, claiming, "It'll be near it but not touching it, and pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of." Compounding the controversy, the Treasury Department has restricted its staff from sharing images of the East Wing, citing potential security concerns, as it is situated nearby the demolition site. The White House has responded to the public outcry, labeling it as "manufactured outrage." Adding to the intrigue, Comcast has been identified as one of the significant contributors to this project, though specifics regarding its financial involvement remain unclear. Notably, CNBC is set to transition from Comcast to a new parent company, Versant, before the year concludes.
