YouTube is initiating a voluntary buyout program for its U.S. employees as part of a significant restructuring aimed at enhancing its focus on artificial intelligence. This strategic shift aligns with Google's CEO Sundar Pichai's broader push for increased productivity through AI integration across the organization. In a recent internal communication, YouTube's CEO Neal Mohan highlighted that this is the first major reorganization of the platform's product teams in ten years. A spokesperson for YouTube emphasized the importance of AI for the platform's future, stating, "The next frontier for YouTube is AI." Despite the restructuring, YouTube has assured that no jobs will be cut. The new organizational structure will see three product groups reporting directly to Mohan. Christian Oestlien, who previously served as the vice president of product management, will head the subscription products division, which includes YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, Primetime Channels, Podcasts, and Commerce. Meanwhile, Chief Product Officer Johanna Voolich will oversee the viewer products team, which encompasses the core YouTube app as well as features like Living Room, Search and Discovery, YouTube Kids, Learning, and Trust and Safety. This reorganization reflects a broader trend in the tech industry as companies adapt to rapid advancements in AI while navigating challenges such as increased operational costs. In a related move, Amazon has announced plans to lay off approximately 14,000 corporate employees as part of its investment in AI initiatives.
