YouTube has finalized an agreement to pay $24.5 million as part of a settlement concerning the suspension of former President Donald Trump's account, which occurred in the wake of the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. According to court documents filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, this settlement does not imply any admission of liability or wrongdoing by the defendants or associated parties. Trump initiated legal action against YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter in mid-2021, following the suspension of his accounts due to concerns over potential incitement to violence. As Trump returned to the White House for a second term after winning the election in November, several tech companies began to resolve their legal disputes with him. Earlier this year, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, announced a $25 million settlement to resolve its lawsuit with Trump. Additionally, in February, Elon Musk’s X, previously known as Twitter, agreed to a settlement of around $10 million related to its case with the former president. In August, a group of Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts, sent a letter to Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube’s CEO Neal Mohan expressing their apprehensions about a potential settlement with Trump. The senators raised concerns that this could create a perception of a 'quid-pro-quo' arrangement, potentially allowing the companies to evade full accountability for violations of federal laws regarding competition and consumer protection, which could lead to issues with federal bribery regulations.
