YouTube increases Premium price again, says 90-second unskippable ads are a bug

YouTube has announced a price hike for its Premium subscription service, marking another increase for viewers who enjoy ad-free streaming. As the platform transitions from a playground of cat videos to a hub for popular streaming content, subscribers are now facing a monthly fee of $15.99, up from $13.99. This change aims to enhance service features and support creators on the platform. Existing subscribers have received email notifications regarding the new pricing, which will take effect on the billing date of June 7, 2026. For those on the family plan, the cost will rise to $26.99, an increase of $4. Additionally, the Premium Lite subscription, which minimizes ads, has also seen a price adjustment, now costing $8.99 per month. This adjustment comes after a series of price increases since the service first launched as YouTube Red in 2015 at $9.99 per month. The service rebranded to YouTube Premium in 2018, and the cost has steadily climbed to the current rate. While this is the first price rise in the U.S. since 2023, international viewers experienced increases in 2024. In light of the price changes, YouTube has acknowledged an issue with lengthy ad breaks, attributing some of the frustration to a bug they are currently addressing. As the streaming industry faces ongoing price hikes, YouTube is not alone; competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are also raising their rates, leading many to question the sustainability of subscription models in the face of rising costs. In a related trend, there has been a noticeable increase in internet piracy rates worldwide.
