YouTube Music celebrates 10 years with new features that help it compete with Spotify

In a significant move to strengthen its position in the music streaming industry, YouTube Music is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the introduction of innovative features aimed at rivaling Spotify and other competitors. One of the standout additions is the "Taste Match" playlist, a dynamic feature that curates playlists based on the shared musical interests of multiple users, reminiscent of Spotify's Blend. Additionally, YouTube Music will enhance user engagement by notifying fans about upcoming music releases, merchandise, and concerts. A partnership with Bandsintown will allow users to discover concert information while watching videos and Shorts on the platform. These enhancements are designed not only to close the gap with Spotify but also to bolster the social networking aspect of YouTube within its music service. YouTube has also revealed impressive statistics about its music catalog, which now boasts over 300 million tracks, including studio recordings, live performances, remixes, and covers. In comparison, Spotify's catalog exceeds 100 million tracks. Furthermore, YouTube Music features more than 4 billion music-centered user-generated playlists, with 1.8 billion being public. The new "Taste Match" playlists will update daily, allowing users to merge their unique musical preferences into a single playlist. This feature promotes a collaborative and social listening experience. Users will also be able to comment on albums and playlists directly, enhancing interaction within the app. Loyalty badges, such as "First to Watch" and "Top Listener," will reward fans for their engagement, with more badges set to be introduced. For artists, YouTube Music offers the opportunity to celebrate milestones based on music video views, including benchmarks like 100,000, 1 million, and even 1 billion views. YouTube Music's user base has also seen remarkable growth, increasing from 100 million users in February 2024 to over 125 million combined users across YouTube Music and YouTube Premium by March 2025, including trial users.
