YouTube is enhancing its Premium Lite subscription, priced at $7.99 per month, by introducing coveted features such as offline video downloads and background playback. These capabilities allow users to enjoy videos even when their screens are off or while using other apps, which were previously exclusive to the more expensive $13.99 monthly subscription plan. The decision to roll out these new features stemmed from user feedback during a pilot program, where subscribers expressed a desire for enhancements that would make the Lite option more appealing. Launched in March, YouTube Premium Lite was designed to offer a budget-friendly solution that eliminates ads from most videos across various popular categories like gaming, fashion, beauty, cooking, and news. However, ads will still appear on music-related content and music videos, and Lite subscribers will not have access to the ad-free YouTube Music app. With the introduction of these new features, the ad-free music content remains the primary incentive for users to upgrade to the full Premium subscription. This update is anticipated to attract more users who were hesitant to pay solely for ad-free viewing but sought additional benefits. Initially launched in Thailand, Germany, and Australia, the Lite subscription made its way to the U.S. last year and is now available in numerous global markets, including Canada, Brazil, the U.K., India, Mexico, and various regions in Europe and Asia. YouTube's subscription services have been on a steady ascent, contributing to an overall revenue of $60 billion in 2025, as reported by parent company Alphabet during their Q4 earnings announcement. Additionally, YouTube’s ad revenue rose by 9%, reaching $11.38 billion in the fourth quarter. The segment encompassing subscriptions, platforms, and devices reported a 17% increase in revenue to $13.6 billion in Q4, largely driven by growth in YouTube subscriptions, including both YouTube Music and YouTube Premium. As of March 2025, Alphabet noted that there are over 125 million users of YouTube Music and YouTube Premium globally, with total paid subscriptions across consumer services exceeding 325 million.
