YouTube brings a new feature to stop you from endlessly scrolling Shorts

YouTube is taking a stand against the all-too-common experience of losing track of time while scrolling through Shorts. Users often find themselves engrossed in a seemingly endless stream of brief videos, sometimes for hours on end. To combat this issue, the platform has unveiled a new timer feature designed to help viewers manage their time spent watching Shorts. This innovative Timer feature allows users to set a daily limit on the duration they can spend scrolling through Shorts on the mobile app. Once the designated time is up, users will receive a non-intrusive prompt indicating that their scrolling has been paused for the day. However, it's important to note that this feature currently does not integrate with parental controls, meaning that parents cannot yet impose limits on their children's viewing time. YouTube has indicated that it plans to enhance the feature to include parental controls later this year, at which point parents will have the ability to set specific limits for their kids. The rise of social media platforms has often led to concerns about 'doomscrolling' due to their infinite scrolling mechanics. Research has highlighted the mental health risks associated with this behavior, including increased anxiety, reduced focus, and impaired learning capabilities. It has also been suggested that such habits may alter the brain's reward system, leading to an insatiable craving for the next headline and diminished impulse control. YouTube has previously introduced similar features aimed at promoting healthier viewing habits. The 'Take a Break' option prompts users to pause after a set duration of 15, 30, 60, or 90 minutes, encouraging them to step away from the screen. Additionally, the bedtime reminder feature alerts users when it's time to stop watching and go to sleep, although ultimately, the decision to continue watching lies with the user. These initiatives reflect YouTube's ongoing commitment to fostering a more mindful viewing experience.
