In an effort to help users manage their time spent on the platform, YouTube is rolling out a new timer feature aimed specifically at Shorts viewers. Many users find themselves caught in a loop of watching short videos, often realizing hours have passed. This new functionality reflects the increasing scrutiny tech companies face regarding user engagement and the potential for burnout. With the latest update, users can now establish daily time limits for their Shorts viewing directly through the app's settings. Once the set limit is reached, a notification will pop up, pausing scrolling on the Shorts feed. However, users have the option to dismiss this alert if they choose to continue watching. Earlier this year, Android Authority reported on the development of this feature, prompting YouTube to confirm its exploration of time-management tools for Shorts. Currently, the time limit feature does not integrate with parental controls, meaning parents cannot impose specific restrictions for their children's viewing habits just yet. However, YouTube has announced that parental controls are on the way, set to launch next year, which will prevent children from dismissing these prompts. Previously, YouTube has introduced various digital well-being features, such as “take a break” reminders and “bedtime” alerts, designed to combat excessive screen time. The “take a break” feature allows users to receive reminders at intervals of their choosing, while the bedtime reminder sends notifications at designated times to encourage users to wind down for the night. While these initiatives showcase YouTube’s commitment to corporate responsibility, their optional nature raises questions about their effectiveness in genuinely reducing user engagement. This comes amid a backdrop of nearly 2,000 lawsuits filed in the U.S. against social media platforms, with claims that these companies have deliberately designed addictive features that pose risks to children’s mental health.
