YouTube now has a way for parents to block kids from watching Shorts

In response to growing concerns about the online safety of minors, YouTube is taking significant steps to bolster parental controls. The Google-owned platform has announced new features aimed at regulating how much time children and teenagers spend engaging with YouTube Shorts, its counterpart to TikTok and Instagram Reels. With this update, parents can now set specific time limits on their children's accounts to manage Shorts viewing. This functionality aims to curb excessive scrolling and ensure children aren't distracted from their studies or other important activities. Additionally, parents have the option to completely block Shorts access, whether permanently or temporarily, which can be particularly useful during study sessions. YouTube also introduces customizable reminders for Bedtime and Take a Break, promoting healthy viewing habits among users. While these features are primarily designed for children, adults can also utilize them to manage their own viewing times effectively. Recognizing the challenges parents face when switching between accounts, YouTube plans to streamline the process in its app, allowing for easy toggling between an adult's and a child's profile. This update comes as part of YouTube’s commitment to enhancing the safety and supervision capabilities for families. These new controls complement existing features that allow parents to oversee their teenagers' channel activities, aligning with similar measures introduced by other platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. Furthermore, YouTube's age-estimation technology, launched last year, helps identify whether an account belongs to a teen, thereby ensuring a more age-appropriate content experience.
