YouTube has announced a significant enhancement to its parental control features, allowing parents to monitor and limit the time their teens can spend on the platform's short-form video segment, known as Shorts. This new functionality is part of a broader initiative aimed at safeguarding young users amidst escalating concerns from families, advocates, and lawmakers about the addictive nature of social media. With these new controls, parents can set specific time limits for Shorts, ranging from two hours to completely disabling the feature. For instance, they can choose to restrict access to zero minutes when they want their teens to concentrate on schoolwork, or allow an hour of viewing during long car rides for entertainment. Additionally, YouTube will implement custom bedtime reminders and “take a break” notifications for teenagers. These automated prompts are already standard for users under 18. The platform is also streamlining the process of creating supervised accounts, making it easier for parents to manage their children's access on shared devices. To further enhance safety, YouTube is revising its content recommendation guidelines for teens, focusing on videos that promote curiosity, life skills, and credible information beneficial to their wellbeing. This follows a previous commitment made last year to utilize artificial intelligence to estimate users' ages, ensuring that teens are placed under stricter protective settings regardless of the age they enter during registration. In a landscape of heightened scrutiny, other major platforms, such as Instagram and ChatGPT, have similarly taken steps to improve parental controls for younger audiences. This week, YouTube's parent company, Google, faced public attention after an advocate raised concerns about Google notifying her nearly 13-year-old son about the option to remove parental supervision from his account. In response, Google has clarified that users aged 13 and above must obtain parental consent to disable supervision, reinforcing their commitment to child safety online. These recent updates highlight YouTube's ongoing effort to create a safer environment for its younger audience, helping parents maintain control over their children's digital experience.
