In a significant move to combat misinformation, Google revealed on Monday that it has deleted nearly 11,000 YouTube channels and accounts associated with state-sponsored propaganda efforts from countries including China and Russia during the second quarter. Among these, over 7,700 channels were identified as being linked to China, disseminating content in both Chinese and English that aimed to promote the Chinese government, support President Xi Jinping, and comment on U.S. foreign policies. Additionally, more than 2,000 channels tied to Russian propaganda were also removed. These channels featured content in various languages that endorsed Russia while criticizing Ukraine, NATO, and Western nations. This action follows Google's earlier efforts in May, when it took down 20 YouTube channels, four ad accounts, and a blog associated with RT, the Russian state media outlet accused of financially backing prominent conservative figures for content related to the upcoming 2024 election. Notable personalities like Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, and Benny Johnson were reported to have created content for Tenent Media, a Tennessee-based company mentioned in the indictment. YouTube's crackdown on RT channels began shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in March 2022. These account removals are part of the ongoing efforts by Google’s Threat Analysis Group to address global disinformation and coordinated influence operations. In its second quarter report, Google also highlighted the dismantling of influence campaigns from other nations including Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Israel, Romania, and Ghana, which were targeting political adversaries. Some of these campaigns were closely tied to escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly narratives surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict. In the first quarter alone, Google had previously removed over 23,000 accounts. Meanwhile, Meta announced last week that it had taken down around 10 million profiles impersonating prominent content creators in an ongoing effort to tackle spam and misinformation on its platforms.
