50K YouTubers rage against AI spying that could expose identities

A significant backlash is brewing among YouTubers as they rally against the platform's new initiative to implement AI for detecting underage users in the United States. Recently, a petition on Change.org has gained momentum, rapidly approaching its target of 50,000 signatures. Many creators are hopeful that this collective protest will halt the widespread implementation of AI-driven age checks that they believe could jeopardize their anonymity and access to beloved content. YouTube's age verification system utilizes a range of indicators to estimate a user's age, including the types of videos they search for, the genres they've previously watched, and the duration of their account activity. If the system determines that a user is likely under 18, it places restrictions on their account. This includes disabling personalized advertisements and activating digital wellbeing features designed to shield younger audiences from potentially harmful content. To remove these age-related limitations, users are required to verify their ages by providing sensitive information such as a government-issued ID, credit card, or a selfie. Privacy advocates have expressed serious concerns regarding the implications of these AI age checks. YouTube has not clarified how data from users incorrectly classified as minors will be managed or retained, with a spokesperson stating only that the company does not keep user ID or payment card information for advertising purposes. Signatories of the petition echo the worries of privacy experts, fearing that a potentially flawed and invasive system could misinterpret their viewing habits, forcing them to reveal personal data that may be vulnerable to leaks or breaches. Experts have pointed out that even advanced age estimation technology has a margin of error of about two years in either direction, which could disproportionately affect users between the ages of 16 and 20, increasing their risk of misclassification.
