A collective of YouTube creators has expanded their legal battle against major tech companies by including Snap in their lawsuit. The group, representing three YouTube channels with a combined following of approximately 6.2 million subscribers, alleges that Snap has utilized their video content without authorization to train its artificial intelligence models, specifically for features like the 'Imagine Lens' that allows users to modify images based on text prompts. Previously, these creators filed similar lawsuits against Nvidia, Meta, and ByteDance, all over the unauthorized use of their content. The latest proposed class action, submitted on Friday in California's Central District Court, accuses Snap of employing large-scale data sets, such as the HD-VILA-100M, designed strictly for academic and research purposes. The plaintiffs assert that Snap circumvented YouTube’s technical barriers, terms of service, and licensing agreements to exploit this content for commercial gain. The lawsuit seeks statutory damages and a permanent injunction to prevent further copyright violations. Leading the charge is the h3h3 YouTube channel, which boasts 5.52 million subscribers, alongside smaller channels like MrShortGame Golf and Golfoholics. This case is part of a broader trend where content creators are challenging AI developers over copyright issues, reflecting a growing tension between digital content providers and AI technology firms. The Copyright Alliance reports that over 70 copyright infringement lawsuits have been initiated against AI companies by various creators, including authors and artists. While some cases have resulted in favorable rulings for tech giants, others have seen AI companies like Anthropic settle with plaintiffs. As this legal landscape evolves, many cases remain in active litigation. Snap has been approached for comment, and updates will follow if a response is received.
