In a remarkable announcement on Tuesday, YouTube revealed that it has distributed over $100 billion to creators, artists, and media companies since 2021. This significant financial boost has been largely driven by an increase in viewership on connected television devices. The platform noted that the number of channels earning over $100,000 from TV screens has surged by 45% year-over-year. Johanna Voolich, YouTube's Chief Product Officer, emphasized the vital role of creators in transforming culture and entertainment, highlighting the platform's commitment to supporting its community. This milestone arrives as YouTube commemorates its 20th anniversary and intensifies its efforts to position itself as one of the most profitable media entities globally. The updated payout figure and a variety of new creator tools were announced during YouTube's annual Made on YouTube event held in New York City. Among the exciting new features are advanced artificial intelligence tools designed for YouTube Shorts, the platform's short-form vertical video service. These tools will allow creators to effortlessly convert raw video footage into polished clips, complete with music, transitions, and voiceovers. Additionally, eligible videos can now have their dialogue transformed into songs for use in Shorts. YouTube also introduced its latest AI video generator, Veo 3, which will be integrated into Shorts. Interestingly, Google utilizes a selection of YouTube videos to train Veo 3, a fact that caught many creators off guard, as reported by CNBC in June. Since its inception, YouTube has become a vast repository, hosting over 20 billion videos, including music, Shorts, and podcasts. Last year, CEO Neal Mohan stated that the company had paid a staggering $70 billion to creators from 2021 to 2024.
