In a surprising move, Elon Musk's xAI has appointed 20-year-old Diego Pasini to lead its data annotation team. This development comes shortly after the company underwent significant layoffs, with reports indicating that over 500 employees were let go. Pasini, who graduated high school in 2023—the same year xAI was established—now heads a team that plays a crucial role in training the Grok AI system. This group consists of both contractual and full-time staff tasked with labeling and categorizing raw data, essential for enhancing Grok's understanding of the world. The young leader stepped into his new role after at least nine senior employees had their Slack accounts disabled, a move that followed the company's recent layoffs. In an effort to reassure his team, Pasini held an all-hands meeting where he communicated that xAI did not intend to implement further layoffs, despite another 100 job cuts occurring shortly thereafter. Since his appointment, Pasini has actively engaged with the remaining employees, conducting one-on-one meetings to discuss their roles within the company. He also shared an announcement via Slack, urging his colleagues to concentrate on specific tests that would influence their future at xAI. Before joining xAI, Pasini studied computer science and economics at the University of Pennsylvania, though he is currently noted as being on leave. His educational background includes a prestigious high school, the Pingry School in New Jersey, known for its rigorous academic programs and annual tuition exceeding $47,000. While at Pingry, he was involved in robotics and even presented research on drones at MIT in 2022. Additionally, Pasini is recognized as a 2024 fellow at the investment firm Contrary, which has collaborated with notable companies such as Anduril and Replit. His enthusiasm for the future of robotics and tech startups has been evident in his recent social media activity, where he has drawn the attention of Elon Musk on X (formerly Twitter). Pasini's journey at xAI began in January after he emerged victorious in a hackathon hosted by the company in San Francisco, alongside two other participants who later secured positions at xAI and Tesla.
