At just 22 years old, Mahmoud Ashraf Mahmoud Mohamed, known as Komy A., is navigating the challenging waters of entrepreneurship while completing his final year at Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation in Kuala Lumpur. A cybersecurity major, he embarked on his startup journey with Genta AI, which he founded in November 2024, after recognizing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in the software industry. Initially working for a UK software firm, Mahmoud integrated AI tools into his tasks, ultimately leading him to automate processes for multiple clients simultaneously. This success fueled his ambition to develop his own AI-focused business, prompting him to leave his job and fully commit to Genta AI. As the company rapidly expanded, he hired seasoned professionals with over a decade of software development experience, further solidifying his startup’s foundation. However, the demands of entrepreneurship have taken a toll on his academic life. Mahmoud often finds himself prioritizing Genta AI over his studies, leading to concerns about his ability to finish his degree. With a packed schedule filled with meetings and work commitments, he sometimes feels detached from the traditional student experience, missing out on social activities and campus events. His daily routine kickstarts around 8 a.m. with work-related emails and updates, followed by attending university classes, which have increasingly become a secondary focus. After lectures, he frequently heads to coworking spaces or cafes to continue his work until late at night, accommodating clients based in the U.S. This relentless pace reflects the sacrifices he has made, including socializing and networking opportunities that are typically integral to university life. Despite the challenges, Mahmoud believes age should not be a barrier to entrepreneurship. He acknowledges, however, that his youth can sometimes lead to difficulties in securing respect from potential clients, who may underestimate his capabilities. He emphasizes the importance of proving oneself through results and gaining the trust of clients, rather than allowing age to dictate perceptions. Managing a diverse team of 16 spread across different countries presents its own challenges. Mahmoud is committed to fostering a positive work environment, steering clear of micromanagement while still holding his team to high standards. The experience has taught him valuable lessons in leadership and adaptability. Mahmoud encourages other young aspiring founders to take action now rather than waiting for the right moment. He believes that the best way to learn is through experience, advocating for a proactive approach to entrepreneurship. His journey exemplifies the unique challenges faced by young innovators striving to balance education and ambition in the fast-evolving tech landscape.
