OpenAI says 18 to 24-year-olds account for nearly 50% of ChatGPT usage in India

OpenAI has identified a significant trend among young users in India, with individuals aged 18 to 24 representing nearly half of all interactions on ChatGPT. The data, released on Friday, indicates that users under 30 account for a remarkable 80% of the platform's activity in the country. The AI organization noted that the primary use of ChatGPT among Indian users revolves around professional tasks, with 35% of messages related to work. This figure is notably higher than the global average of 30%. Additionally, OpenAI's coding assistant, Codex, has gained considerable traction in India. The usage of Codex among Indian users is reported to be three times that of the global median, with weekly engagement quadrupling since the launch of its Mac application two weeks ago. Moreover, Indian users are posing three times as many coding-related inquiries compared to the global average. This aligns with recent findings from Anthropic, which highlighted that 45.2% of tasks performed by Claude in India are software-related. Beyond professional queries, ChatGPT interactions in India reveal a diverse range of requests: 35% sought guidance, 20% posed general knowledge questions, and another 20% involved requests for writing assistance. Notably, India stands as OpenAI's second-largest market, boasting over 100 million weekly users. The company has been actively engaging with this demographic through affordable subscription options and promotional campaigns aimed at increasing adoption. "AI adoption is accelerating faster than our capacity to measure its impact, presenting challenges for informed decision-making. Signals is our approach to providing tangible evidence to ground India's AI discussions in reality rather than speculation," stated Ronnie Chatterji, OpenAI's chief economist. In recent developments, OpenAI has been busy in India, coinciding with a major AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. Plans are underway to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, and a significant partnership with Tata Group has been established to secure 100 megawatts of AI computing power. This collaboration aims to distribute ChatGPT Enterprise through Tata's IT services division, TCS. Additionally, OpenAI has forged partnerships with fintech company Pine Labs, travel platforms Ixigo and Makemytrip, and food delivery service Eternal. The company is also working with educational institutions to provide its tools to over 100,000 students in the coming six years.
