Former Meta AI chief Yann LeCun's startup raises $1.03 billion to build world models

Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), the brainchild of Yann LeCun, who previously served as Meta's chief AI scientist and is a distinguished Turing Award laureate, has successfully secured $1.03 billion in funding. The startup's pre-money valuation stands at an impressive $3.50 billion. This significant financial boost is earmarked for the development and commercialization of sophisticated AI systems capable of thinking, planning, and navigating real-world environments. The funding round was co-led by notable firms such as Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, Hiro Capital, HV Capital, and Bezos Expeditions. In addition to these entities, a host of individual investors joined the effort, including prominent figures like Tim and Rosemary Berners-Lee, Jim Breyer, Mark Cuban, Mark Leslie, Xavier Niel, and Eric Schmidt. LeCun has ambitious plans for the use of this funding, as reported by Reuters. He aims to construct AI systems that can enhance reasoning and planning capabilities while effectively operating in complex environments. LeCun asserts that the current trend of relying solely on prediction-based AI models falls short of achieving truly intelligent agents capable of addressing intricate challenges. To facilitate its growth, AMI intends to invest in computing resources and talent acquisition across key global AI centers. The startup plans to establish teams in four major cities: Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore. With this expansion, AMI envisions marketing its AI solutions to businesses operating complex systems in various sectors, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, biomedical, and pharmaceutical industries. LeCun expressed his ambition for AMI, stating, "We want to become the main provider of intelligent systems." Additionally, he harbors aspirations of supporting consumer-oriented applications, such as domestic robots and the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. He noted, "A domestic robot would require a level of common sense to effectively understand the physical world." Beyond the support of its lead investors, AMI is also backed by notable companies, including NVIDIA, Samsung, Sea, Temasek, Toyota Ventures, and Publicis Groupe, among others.
