Yann LeCun, the esteemed chief AI scientist at Meta, is reportedly preparing to leave the tech giant to pursue his own startup venture, according to a recent Financial Times report. This news comes as Meta undergoes significant changes in its AI strategy, including the establishment of Meta Superintelligence Labs earlier this year, spearheaded by Mark Zuckerberg. LeCun, a renowned figure in the field of artificial intelligence and a recipient of the Turing Award, serves as a Silver Professor at New York University, where he teaches data science, neural science, and computer engineering. Sources indicate that he has informed colleagues of his intention to exit Meta in the upcoming months and is currently in the early stages of securing funding for his new project. In recent months, Zuckerberg has shifted focus away from long-term initiatives at the Meta Fundamental AI Research Lab (FAIR), which LeCun has led since its inception in 2013. The hiring of former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang to lead the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs is part of this strategic pivot, aimed at enhancing competition with industry leaders such as OpenAI and Google. As a result of these changes, LeCun has transitioned from reporting to Meta's chief product officer Chris Cox to now working under Wang. Notably, LeCun has expressed skepticism regarding the use of large language models (LLMs) as a means to achieve superintelligence, which may conflict with Zuckerberg’s vision. Instead, he has dedicated his efforts to creating advanced AI systems known as 'world models,' which aspire to emulate human-like understanding by learning from visual and spatial data rather than solely relying on language. He estimates that achieving this architectural development could take a decade. While Zuckerberg has aggressively recruited tech talent with enticing compensation packages, the company is facing a wave of departures. Earlier this year, Joelle Pineau, Meta’s vice-president of AI research, left for the Canadian AI startup Cohere, and the company has also laid off 600 employees from its AI research team as part of cost-cutting measures. Amidst these challenges, Zuckerberg is under increasing pressure to validate the substantial investments made in the pursuit of superintelligence.
