Yann LeCun, the Chief AI Scientist at Meta, is taking a bold leap into the startup world, marking a significant shift from his long tenure at the tech giant. After 12 years at Meta, with five years as the founding director of its Fundamental AI Research lab and seven years as the chief AI scientist, LeCun announced his departure in a LinkedIn post last month. The upcoming startup aims to pursue LeCun's ambitious vision for Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), a project he has been developing alongside colleagues from FAIR and New York University. In his announcement, he expressed a desire to create AI systems that can comprehend the physical world, possess a persistent memory, reason effectively, and plan intricate action sequences. While Meta will remain a partner in this venture, it will not be providing financial backing. During a recent appearance at the AI-Pulse event in Paris, LeCun shared that his new project's architecture has garnered interest from Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, who views it as a potential future direction for AI development. LeCun's approach aims to build 'world models'—advanced machine learning systems designed to aid human decision-making and predictions based on abstract representations of reality. This initiative represents a departure from Meta’s current focus, which has shifted toward superintelligence—an advanced and theoretical form of AI capable of reasoning at or beyond human levels. This year, the company restructured its AI efforts around the newly established Superintelligence Lab, which Zuckerberg hopes will facilitate the development of 'personal superintelligence' systems. LeCun noted that the wide range of applications for his startup exceeded Meta's interests, making independence the preferable route for his innovative ambitions. As this new chapter unfolds, both Meta and LeCun have refrained from commenting further on the future of this partnership and the startup's potential impact on the AI landscape.
