Yann LeCun calls Alexandr Wang 'inexperienced' and predicts more Meta AI employee departures

Renowned AI pioneer Yann LeCun has expressed skepticism regarding Meta's choice to appoint Alexandr Wang, co-founder of Scale AI, as the head of its Super Intelligence Lab. In a candid interview with the Financial Times, LeCun, who recently departed Meta as its chief AI scientist to start his own venture, labeled Wang as 'inexperienced' and suggested he lacks a deep understanding of the research community. LeCun acknowledged Wang's ability to learn quickly but emphasized that his lack of research experience could hinder his effectiveness. ‘He learns fast, he knows what he doesn't know… but there’s no experience with research or how to practice it,’ LeCun remarked. This perspective casts doubt on Wang’s potential impact, especially given that he was a major part of Zuckerberg's ambitious $14 billion investment strategy aimed at enhancing Meta's AI capabilities. The AI landscape at Meta has faced challenges, particularly with the development of Llama, the company’s flagship open-source AI model. LeCun revealed that the team had 'fudged' some of Llama 4's results, a move that sparked criticism about the integrity of their benchmark testing. This incident reportedly eroded Mark Zuckerberg’s confidence in the entire GenAI organization, leading to a significant restructuring. Despite Wang's brief tenure as LeCun's superior after the reorganization, LeCun stressed that effective research leadership does not involve directing researchers, stating, 'You don’t tell a researcher what to do.' He maintained that Zuckerberg continues to support his vision for AI's future, yet noted that the CEO's hiring strategy appears heavily focused on large language models (LLMs). LeCun has been vocal about his belief that LLMs are limited in their potential for achieving superintelligence, asserting, 'I'm not going to change my mind because some dude thinks I’m wrong.' With his new startup, Advanced Machine Intelligence, LeCun aims to pursue an alternative approach that he believes is more promising than LLMs. He will serve as executive chair, embracing the role of a visionary rather than a CEO, reflecting on his strengths in guiding innovative projects while acknowledging his organizational challenges.
