A longstanding rivalry between two prominent figures in the artificial intelligence sector has once again come to the forefront. Yann LeCun, the former chief AI scientist at Meta, has expressed his critical views on Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI. In a recent interview with CNBC, LeCun did not hold back, stating that Musk's xAI is “kind of a failure.” He elaborated on Musk's challenges in attracting top-tier talent, asserting that his past behavior towards his team has made it increasingly difficult for him to recruit skilled professionals in the AI field. This comment refers specifically to the exodus of xAI's founding team, all of whom have departed, with the final member, Ross Nordeen, reportedly cut off from company systems and group communications. LeCun pointed out a notable action taken by xAI: the leasing of its data centers to rival firms like Anthropic. He interpreted this move as indicative of xAI's struggles, suggesting, “He’s got this huge infrastructure, which he rents to other people, because that’s the only way he can recoup the costs.” When asked about the competitive future of xAI in the AI landscape, LeCun's response was clear. He expressed skepticism, stating, “No, I don’t,” when questioned if xAI could stand against industry leaders. While his critique of xAI was sharp, LeCun offered a more favorable perspective on Musk’s other enterprises. He praised SpaceX for its impressive achievements and even mentioned his ownership of a Tesla vehicle, although he couldn’t resist a dig, commenting, “Full self-driving is not full self-driving, but it’s useful.”
